Al Roumi calls for awareness about the rights of people with disability

Abu Dhabi, Dec 13, 2008 (WAM) - Minister of Social Affairs HE Maryam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roumi said that more awareness should be created among the Arab masses about the rights of the disabled people living among them. She also emphasised the need for investing all available resources to rehabilitate the people with disability so as to integrate them to the normal stream of life.
In a statement made to mark the Arab Disability Day, which falls on 13th December 2008, Al Roumi said that it is the first time the Arab world is marking this day. All the various institutions working in the field of rehabilitation of the disabled people will join the governments to mark the occasion, which also coincides with the day when the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted in 2006.
Al Roumi said that UAE signed the UN agreement and its Optional Protocol without hesitation earlier in February this year committing itself to abide by the rules. This endorsement was also a completion of the earlier ratification by the country, the project of the Arab Decade for Persons with Disability 2004-2013 initiated by the Arab League, Al Roumi noted.
The minister also stressed the need for actively implementing the articles of UAE Federal Law No. 29 (2006) pertaining to the rights of people with special needs.
The UN agreement sets out what countries have to do to make sure that disabled people have the same rights as everybody else and are never discriminated against.
