UAE is working against climate change - minister
Poznan - Dec 13, 2008 (WAM) - The UAE has intensified its efforts towards minimising the effects of climate change.
Dr Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water said in a speech delivered at the 14th UN conference on climate change held in Poznan, Poland, from 1-12 December, that the UAE has directed a lot of attention towards this vital issue, where the related social, economic and environment aspects of climate change represent a basic part of the country's policy in this respect.
Bin Fahad also said the UAE adopts and takes part in developing techniques and modern systems in the oil industrial sector.
Renewable sources
It uses sustainable and renewable energy sources, where the "Masdar" initiative in 2006 took part in setting up a number of programmes and projects that enhance this aspect of the UAE's responsible stand.
The minister also referred to the UAE's announcement a few weeks ago, of setting up the biggest solar energy factory in the Middle East to be based in Dubai.
The production capacity of the industrial plant will be 130 megawatts at its first stage which will be ready to launch in the last quarter of 2010.
Bin Fahad said it is important to point to the use of nuclear energy and the adoption of this option for peaceful use, especially in the context of power generation and water desalination.
The third point outlined by the minister was the UAE's competent use of energy which is a basic component in the UAE's strategic plan.
The minister said in his speech that climate change and reaction procedures have an overall effect on the globe, especially on the developing world that will be more vulnerable than others to the global climatic changes.
He stressed that this will negatively impact the efforts of these countries that want to reach their targets in sustainable development. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
