Champions League postponed to October next year
Mumbai, Dec 12 (PTI) The USD six million prized Champions Twenty20 Cricket League has been put off and would now be held in India only in October next year, its Governing Council announced Friday.
The inaugural edition of the League, which was scheduled
from December 3-10 this year, was cancelled in the wake of the
terror strikes in Mumbai late last month and there were
speculations that it would be held in January, 2009.
However, the League's Governing Council headed by
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President
Lalit Modi, decided Friday to cancel the 2008 event and put
off the inaugural edition till late next year after
considering all aspects, including the international calendar
and the domestic schedules of the participating teams.
Modi said through a media statement that the Governing
Council "took this collective decision after taking into
account all aspects".
The Governing Council comprises the League's founder
Board members - BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South
Africa.
For the 2009 event, six teams - two each from the
founding Board members - are confirmed to take part while the
other participating teams would be finalised by the end of
next month.
"Invitations will be extended to the winners/finalists
of the respective countries domestic Twenty20 tournaments of
the participating countries," the statement added.
Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore were to host the matches in
the 2008 Champions League.
Indian Premier League champions Rajasthan Royals and
runners-up Chennai Super Kings were the two teams from the
host country that had qualified for the inaugural event but
had to miss out.
The second edition of the IPL is slated in April-May,
next year and the winners and runners-up of that event would
now be eligible to play in the Champions T20 League in
October, 2009.
The decision of the Governing Council would result in
the League being held soon after the conclusion of the ICC
Champions Trophy which, at present, is fixed for
September-October, 2009.
India are also set to host Australia in a seven-match ODI
series in October-November next year as per the ICC's Future
Tours Programme. PTI SSR
