S. Korean Kim Yu-na takes fragile lead at Grand Prix Final
(ATTN: UPDATES; RECASTS lead, headline)
By Sam Kim
GOYANG, South Korea, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Kim Yu-na headed off a
strong performance by Japan's Mao Asada on Friday in winning the short program at
the Grand Prix Final in her country, inching closer to her third straight title
at the top international figure skating event.
Performing in front of a packed crowd of 2,600, the 18-year-old completed a
sequence of near-perfect jumps and spirals to the rhythm of a Russian violin
suite to score 65.94, about half a point higher than world No. 1 Asada.
Kim and her five other rivals will continue their competition Saturday in the
free skate in the city of Goyang, just west of Seoul.
In an earlier contest, Japan's Takahiko Kozuka won the men's competition, scoring
83.90 and edging past Jeremy Abbott of the United States, who finished second.
