Australia to help PNG after storm swells
Australia will give $1 million to Papua New Guinea after high sea swells inundated several provinces. Two children reportedly died as a result of the huge waves. One was hit by a floating log in Wewak, in PNG's East Sepik province, and the other drowned in Aitape, in West Sepik province.
Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said as many as 50,000 people had been affected by
the surges.
He said Australia would send drinking water, tarps and water purification tablets to
affected areas this weekend.
"The (Hercules) plane will fly to Kavieng in New Ireland province and Lorengau in
Manus province where the supplies will be passed onto PNG officials and
non-government organisations for distribution to those in greatest need," Mr Smith
said.
