Police deployment at Saturday's mass gathering of Thaksin supporters

BANGKOK, Dec 12 (TNA) - Police plans tightened security at National Stadium in the capital on Saturday when the pro-Thaksin group calling themselves the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) will meet.

Pol. Lt-Gen. Suchart Muankaew, metropolitan police commissioner, convened a police meeting via video conference with the acting national police chief on Friday morning in preparation for responding to Saturday's mass gathering of the pro government group.

The UDD plans to meet at National Stadium Saturday before gathering again on Monday at Parliament when members of parliament will vote to nominate a new prime minister in an extraordinary parliamentary session.

The police plan to deploy ten companies of officers to provide security at the stadium and search all visitors, Gen. Suchart said. In addition, bomb detectors will be installed for tightened security.

Police checkpoints will be set up on Rama IV Road and roads near the stadium to screen suspicious vehicles.

During the phone-in by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to his gathered supporters, police will record his speech and will take a legal action if any part is considered lese majeste.

On Monday, eight companies of police will be stationed at Parliament and its surrounding areas.

The police will start operation on Sunday to prevent the blockage of the venue by mass gathering in a possible attempt to stop the MPs from entering the Parliament on Monday. If there is any violence, the police will seek reinforcement from the army. (TNA)
