Thailand's Democrat Party leader wants ASEAN summit in February

BANGKOK, Dec 12 (TNA) - Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva suggested on Friday that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, first planned for Bangkok, then to be held in Chiang Mai, and then put off until March, should be held as early as February if he becomes prime minister shortly.

During his meeting with ASEAN Affairs Department director-general Vitthawat Srivihok at the Democrat Party's head office, Mr. Abhisit said the regional summit should be held sooner than originally postponed until March by the acting cabinet and suggested it would likely be held in February in the event that he headed the next coalition government.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to hold an extraordinary session Monday to select a new premier.

The 10 ASEAN member states are scheduled to meet in Indonesia Monday to endorse the ASEAN charter, scheduled to take effect that day, according to the ASEAN Affairs department chief.

The Democrat Party leader assured that the first job of a Democrat-led coalition government would be the moving up of the ASEAN summit's postponed agenda to February with the venue being set in Thailand as earlier planned.

Meanwhile, Japanese ambassador to Thailand Kyochi Komachi as well as Standard Chartered Bank executive officers called on Mr. Abhisit at his party headquarters Friday. (TNA)
