Top court strips lawmaker of seat with guilty verdict

SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed an appellate
court's guilty verdict for an independent lawmaker on charges of defaming his
rival candidate.
Rep. Lee Moo-young was fined 3 million won (US$2,206) on charges of spreading
false rumors against his rival in the run-up to the April parliamentary election.
The ruling immediately stripped him of his seat. It is the first time a lawmaker
has lost his seat in the 18th National Assembly.
Lawmakers fined more than 1 million won for election law violation automatically
lose their seat under the current law.
