No threat of seismic activity in country after tremors hit UAE
Dubai, Dec 11, 2008 (WAM) - Tremors felt in Dubai and the northern emirates during the last few days are not an indication of seismic activity in the UAE, a spokesperson for the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) told Gulf News.
"Those were just after-shocks of the earthquake in southern Iran which will not harm the UAE and people don't need to worry at all". He pointed out that the nearest city in the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah, is at least 140 kilometres from the epicentre of the earthquake, so its after-effects will not harm the UAE.
Residents in the northern emirates reacted with panic on Sunday and Tuesday evening after experiencing light tremors.
The NCMS said the earthquakes which hit Iran measured 5.6 and 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale respectively.
