FLOODS INUNDATE 500 HECTARES OF PADDY NURSERY AREAS IN CIREBON

Cirebon, West Java Province, Dec. 11 (ANTARA) - Floods have inundated around 500 hectares of paddy nursery areas and rice fields in five sub districts in Cirebon District, West Java.

The five flood-affected sub districts were Gegegik, Panguragan, Kapetakan, Suranenggala and Gunungjati, Ali Effendi, head of the Cirebon agricultural, plantation, and animal husbandry services, said here on Thursday.

"Incessant downpours over the past week have triggered floods in rice fields which are prone to inundation because they are located below river and irrigation areas," he said.

He urged local farmers to postpone planting activities pending to a normal amount of rainfall.

The local agricultural service would help give seedlings to farmers who lost their young paddy plants due to the floods.
