ACEH FLASH FLOODS FORCE 12,000 PEOPLE TO EVACUATE
Banda Aceh, Dec 10 (ANTARA) - More than 4,000 families or about 12,000 people in Aceh Singkil district, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province, have since Sunday (Dec 7) been forced to evacuate following flash floods triggered by days of torrential rains.
"They have been evacuated to temporary shelters on higher grounds," Syahbuddin, a local social service officer, said over the telephone from Aceh Singkil on Wednesday.
Syahbuddin said thousands of houses in Singkil Lama and Singkil Kota sub districts were inundated by flood waters after heavy rains caused the Lae Soraya and Lae Cenendang rivers to burst their banks.
"Besides Aceh Singkil, two sub-districts in South Aceh district were also hit by floods but as of Wednesday the water level has started to drop slowly," Syahbuddin said.
Meanwhile, Aceh provincial social service office spokesman Bukhari said logistical assistance had been distributed to the flood vicitims in Aceh Singkil.
"Logistical assistance has been distributed to flood victims in Aceh Singkil," Bukhari said, adding that in the past few weeks a number of districts in Aceh such as East Aceh, North Aceh, Lhokseumawe and Bireuen towns, and South Aceh were hit by floods.
According to Bukhari, flash floods and landslides also hit several areas of Southeast Aceh, Central Aceh, West Aceh, Aceh Jaya, and Nagan Raya districts late last month but there were no fatalities.
