TNI COMMANDER: SITUATION IN MASOHI CONDUCIVE

Jakarta, Dec. 10 (ANTARA) - General Djoko Santoso, the commander of the National Defense Force (TNI), has said that the situation in Masohi, the capital of Central Maluku District, is gradually conducive, in the aftermath of a sectarian clash which happened on Tuesday.

The regional military command in Maluku had been asked to report on the incident, he said after receiving members of Indonesia's Garuda Contingent (Konga) XXIII-B in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNFIL), at TNI Headquarters here on Wednesday.

Some 20 houses were burned down and five people were injured in the incident, he said.

"I have received a report from the local military command that the situation is gradually conducive, and in fact we (the military), the regional police, and local prominent figures have agreed to hold a meeting or dialog to prevent a similar incident from reoccurring," the general said.

Hundreds of soldiers and policemen safeguarded Masohi on Tuesday evening following the clash between different groups.

The head of public relations division of the National Police Headquarters, Inspector General Abubakar B Nataprawira, said in Jakarta on Tuesday the soldiers who were sent to normalize the situation in Masohi were from the Central Maluku regional military command and the Kabaressy 731 Infantry battalion while the policemen came from the Mobile Brigade from the Maluku Regional Police Command and the riot police unit from the Central Maluku Police Resort.

He said the security forces had separated the two fighting groups to avoid further clashes.

The police had also detained a teacher known by his initials as WH who was at the center of the problem that had triggered the clash.

The teacher is suspected to have offended one of the groups in Masohi.

Abubakar said the situation was conducive and under control but security forces remained on guard to preempt a recurrence of the violence.
