RI CONTINGENT IN UNIFIL RETURNS FROM LEBANON

Jakarta, Nov. 10 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's contingent in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNFIL), named Garuda Contingent (Konga) XXIII-B, arrived home on Wednesday after completing its one-year assignment in the southern part of the Middle Eastern country.

The 850-man group was greeted by TNI (National Defense Force) Commander General Djoko Santoso at the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap on Wednesday.

In his welcoming remarks, General Santoso said peace missions were not an unfamiliar task to Indonesia, the TNI in particular.

"Your mission was not just continuing a task the world has entrusted to us, but, more importantly, because it was dictated by our moral principles and philosophy as well as national defense doctrine which loves peace but loves freedom most of all," he said.

Indonesia's commitment to the peace mission in South Lebanon was also in line with the 1945 Constitution mandating the nation to take part in safeguarding world order and creating world peace, he said.

The Garuda Contingent XXIII-B consisted of 528 personnel from the Army, 242 from the Navy, 60 from the Air Force, 16 from the TNI Headquarters, three from the foreign affairs ministry, and one from the defense ministry.
