EARTHQUAKE HITS CILACAP

Cilacap, Indonesia, Dec 10 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale jolted the Cilacap area in Central Java at 9:46 on Wednesday morning, local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) spokesman Mas Pujiono said.

He said the epicenter of the earthquake was located some 111 kilometers southwest of Cilacap.

"The quake's epicenter was located at 8.34 degrees southern latitude and 108.20 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 14 kilometers but it did not have the potential to cause tsunami," Pujiono said, adding the temblor was also felt by people in Pangandaran, West Java.

Meanwhile, a Cilacap resident, Wagino, said he was startled by the earthquake on Wednesday morning.

"I was inside my house because of heavy rain but at 9:46 I was startled as I felt the ground under my feet undulating," Wagino said.
With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia lies
in the seismically-active "Pacific Ring of Fire" and it was hit by a
devastating tsunami on December 26, 2004, leaving at least 200,000 people dead or missing in Aceh province.
