Seoul designates three English libraries

SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will open English libraries for children in three major provincial cities in order to reduce the gap in English education between citizens in its capital and local areas, the education ministry said Wednesday.
Public libraries or community centers in the southern cities of Busan, Daejeon,
and Gwangju will be changed entirely to English libraries or create special rooms
collecting English books as well as materials for English presentation and
schooling, said the ministry.
The libraries will run storytelling sessions, English art classes and programs
for parents, according to the ministry.
The ministry intends to provide a quality English education environment to
low-income class students who have limited access to English learning materials,
as there are few such public organizations or institutions outside Seoul.
"As we open the facilities and operate them in cooperation with local governments
and education offices, we can provide educational opportunity to the
underprivileged and narrow the educational gap," said the ministry in a press
release.
