RTA inspects manufacturing of Ferry Dubai in China
Dubai, Dec 10, 2008 (WAM) - A delegation from Marine Agency at Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently completed a 5-day official visit to the factory where Ferry Dubai boats are manufactured in Guangzhou city, China. The visit aimed to inspect the manufacturing process and matters related to the first phase of manufacturing Ferry Dubai.
"This visit is a follow-up of the latest developments of Ferry Dubai manufacturing process (Phase 1); which incorporates manufacturing of 10 boats with a capacity to accommodate 100 passengers each. The visit was also a good opportunity to review the best global standards in the field of operating and maintaining marine transit modes used in the field of water transport; which is shaping into a key transport component in the city of Dubai" said Khalid Mohammed Al-Zahed, Director of Marine Projects Department at RTA Marine Agency.
"The main objective of the visit was to visit Damen Factory at Guangzhou city in China to review work progress and audit the technical specifications and timeline of the first phase of Ferry Dubai Project. The visit also intended to review the best practices applicable in marine transport stations, and visit some international marine operators stationed in China with a view to qualifying them for participation in operating and maintaining Ferry Dubai Project.
“Manufacturing works in 6 boats is proceeding simultaneously, and manufacturing of the remaining 4 boats will soon take off. All aluminium cutting works needed for all boats have now been 100% completed automatically. Completion and delivery of the first two boats is anticipated in the mid of 2009. The delegation also verified the provision of the appropriate manufacturing environment for manufacturing Ferry Dubai in terms of area and existing facilities. It became evident that the factory is capable of building 10 large-sized boats at a time and has other large potentials.
"The visit was a gateway towards establishing a permanent cooperation between RTA Marine Agency and global companies specialized in marine mass transit industry, and remaining in touch with the best applicable practices. This is particularly relevant as the emirate of Dubai is poised to usher an era of mega marine projects.
This, he added, requires the provision of extensive marine mass transit modes to keep pace with the huge marine urban growth witnessed by Dubai; an exercise that warrants from the RTA to start from today a process of manufacturing of boats to have them delivered well on time" added Al-Zahed.
The visiting delegation submitted recommendations to qualify two international operators, namely: First Ferry and Turbo Jet from Hong Kong and invite them to take part in the tender of operating and maintaining Ferry Dubai. This will pave the way for benefiting from the best global practices applicable in Hong Kong with regard to the integrated marine mass transit systems, building of integrated stations, as well as the provision of commercial outlets, restaurants and recreational venues, and all facilities required for stations.
