Eight detained in sex-ring operation

HCM City (VNA) - Eight people have been temporarily detained for allegedly
running a sex-ring operation at two massage parlors, where 130 women were
being kept against their will, Ho Chi Minh City police have said.

The women were reportedly sexually abused and financially cheated by the
couple named Pham Cao Tri and Phan Thi Yen, who ran the massage centres in
Thu Duc district, according to police.

Police raided the two massage centres, both named Tan Hoang Phat, on Dec. 7
and found that the women had been beaten and in some cases mutilated.

Police said the women told them that some of them had been kept in dog cages
after they tried to escape from the centres, which are located at No. 29-31,
4 Street and 216 Kha Van Can Street .

A 22-year-old girl, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, "I have been
working for this massage centre for nine months. I became seriously ill but
they still forced me to work. I tried to escape by asking my relative to
pick me up at the hospital's gate."

"However, the centre's guards discovered my plans and took me back, beating
and bruising me severely. Although I begged them to stop, they brought me to
the No. 29-31 house at 4 Street and continued to torture me. Fortunately,
the police came in time and rescued me."

The women said they began working at the centres to earn a living as
masseuses.

Each woman signed a contract which stated that the tuition for training
would be 9 million VND (530 USD), and if they quit their job, they would
have to compensate the employers with 15 million VND (880 USD).

The women said the training, however, focused on how to make physical
contact that would lead to sexual arousal of their customers.

Those who refused to perform these acts were beaten and ended up black and
bruised," another girl who worked at the house said.

The girls, whose working day often lasted from 9am to 2am, were not allowed
to go out of the house in Thu Duc district.

They paid 2.6 million VND (153 USD) for meals every month, but dishes were
paltry, with only three fish and a soup bowl for five people.

When they requested an additional dish, the girls were forced to pay
60,000-80,000 VND, police said.

They also said they were forced to pay 500,000 VND to 1 million VND as
birthday gifts for employers' family members every month.

If the girls needed money, they borrowed funds from their employers at a
high interest rate, ending up staying in debt for long periods.

During the raid, police also found a shotgun, a box of seven shotgun shells,
16 separate shotgun shells, women's labour contracts, national identity
cards and many letters asking for help.

Along with the couple, police also arrested six other staff, including Phan
Quoc Cuong, 31, who trained the girls in sexual techniques, and Phan Viet
Hau, 22, the brother of Tri's wife.

Hau acted as a manager of the two houses, police said. Details on other
staff were not released.-Enditem
