PRESIDENT ARRIVES IN BALI FOR DEMCOCRACY FORUM
Denpasar, Bali, Dec 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport on Tuesday afternoon for a two-day working visit during which he would attend a Bali Democracy Forum.
On Wednesday morning, Yudhoyono is scheduled to meet Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and after holding a press conference, at 9.45 am, the president will welcome the heads of state/government who will attend the Bali Democracy Forum.
The heads of state/government included Cavin Rudd, Brunei Darussalam Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
At 10 am, Yudhoyono and Rudd are scheduled to open the democracy forum themed "Building and Consolidating Democracy: A Strategic Agenda for Asia."
A total of 31 countries were expected to send delegations to the event, a forum of cooperation to promote democracy and political freedom in the Asian region.
The Bali forum is intended to encourage Asian countries to develop the principles of democracy in their respective region.
All ASEAN member countries are expected to send delegations to the event, including Myanmar which is facing a problem with democracy.
Other countries such as China, Japan and India also are taking part.
Other nations outside the region are also invited such as Italy, Britain, Switzerland, Tunisia, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, the United States and Canada.
The forum was initiated by Indonesia in an effort to promote democracy in the region and in other areas in the world.
At 15.45, the president and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono will inaygurate the "Institute for Peace and Democracy" at the Udayana University campus in Bukit Jimbaran.
In his working visit to Bali, the president is also accompanied by Informatics and Communications Minister Muhammad Nuh, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, presidential spokesmen Andi Mallarangeng and Dino Patti Djalal.
The president and party are scheduled to leave Bali and return to Jakarta on Wednesday evening at 17.15 pm.
