China's star pianist to hold Seoul recital By Kim Young-gyo
SEOUL, Dec. 9 (Yonhap) -- Chinese pianist Lang Lang, best known for his performance at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will play later this month in Seoul, a concert organizer said Tuesday.
The 26-year-old international phenomenon is to hold his third solo performance in
South Korea, following his previous recitals in 2004 and in 2007, on Dec. 22 at
Seoul Arts Center, according to Mast Media, a company hosting classical musical
concerts.
He also visited Seoul in September to perform with La Scala Phiharmonic Orchestra
led by maestro Chung Myung-whun.
In 1999, the young pianist shot into the spotlight when he became a last-minute
substitution for indisposed virtuoso Andre Watts and played Tchaikovsky's Piano
Concerto No. 1 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Working with the world's best orchestras under the most renowned conductors, Lang
has become the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Berlin Philharmonic,
the Vienna Philharmonic and all the top American orchestras.
Lang is known to have a flamboyant stage presence that immediately commands
attention.
Often characterized by technical bravura, which bewilders some critics for its
excessiveness, Lang seemed to have been improving his insight and maturity in
interpreting pieces, according to Steve Smith, a writer for the New York Times,
who reviewed his performance in November.
The public will be treated at Lang's December recital to most-loved repertoires
by Mozart, Schumann and Liszt.
Lang is also expected to display his dramatic flair playing a piece from
Goyescas, a famous work written by Spanish composer Granados based on paintings
of Goya.
Material from his 2006 album Dragon Songs, a collection of recent compositions
from his homeland, is also on the program.
Lang began learning piano at the age of 3 under the influence of his father who
was in a military band.
At the age of five, Lang won the Shenyang Piano Competition and performed his
first public recital.
He was nine when he entered Beijing's Central Music Conservatory. He went on to
win first prize at the Tchaikovsky International Young Musicians Competition and
Played the complete 24 Etudes of Chopin at the Beijing Concert Hall at 13.
