PRESIDENT ATTENDS WORLD ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY FUNCTION
Jakarta, Dec 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla attended a function to mark World Anti-Corruption Day at the Monas (National Monument) square here Tuesday.
The event was also participated in by 6,500 high-school students, 1,000 Karang Taruna (neigborhood youth association) members, cabinet ministers, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, and Attorney General Hendarman Supanji.
In a report on the occasion, Supandji said, according to World Bank data, as much as US$1 trillion was spent on bribes world-wide, and US$ 80 billion was lost by corruption every year.
"Indonesia as a country ruled by law has placed itself in the forefront of the fight against corruption. On December 9, 2004,the government, through Presidential Instruction No 5/2004, ordered the entire United Indonesia cabinet to accelerate corruption eradication efforts," he said.
Then, in 2005, Supadnji said, a corruption eradication coordination team was set up as a followup to the issuance of Presidential Instruction No5/2004.
"Within a period of three years (2005-2007), the team was able to settle 280 corruption cases and recover a total of Rp 3,95 trillion worth of state assets," he said.
The attorney general said corruption was being eradicated by three kinds of approach, namely educative, preventive, and repressive.
"The three approaches have been carried out together in the fight against corruption," Supandji said, adding that the observance of World Anti-corruption Day should be a momentum to rouse the anti-corruption spirit in the state, the government and among the people.
"On this day, we all make the commitment to uphold the law, even if the sky is coming down or the world is falling apart in pieces," Supandji said.
