VARIOUS VIEWS ON CELEBRATION OF DAY OF SACRIFICE

Jakarta, Dec 8 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Moslems welcomed Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) by conducting prayers, listening to preaches and also sacrificing cows or goats whose meat was distributed to the needy on Monday.

At the Istiqlal grand mosque in Central Jakarta, the prayers were participated in by thousands of people including President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, first lady Any Yudhoyono, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife Mufidah Kalla.

The sermon was meanwhile delivered by Minister of Information and Communication, Muhammad Nuh, who stated that the Hajj pilgrimage must be considered as a journey to get Allah's blessing.

"All of the obstacles and challenges met during the journey must be considered as human beings' struggle to reach the heaven. People must also consider the Haj pilgrimage as a reminder that everything we do in this world should be dedicated to our creator, Allah SWT," the minister said.

Several ministers such as State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Minister of Transportation Jusman Syafii Djamal, Minister of Public Works Djoko Kirmanto, and Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi also attended the prayer service.

On Idul Adha this year, Istiqlal Mosque had received a total of 15 cows and 218 goats from donors consisting of institutions and private individuals.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Affairs minister, Adyaksa Dault who acted as the preacher in the prayer service at Al-Azhar mosque in South Jakarta asked the congregation, "Have we ever really made a sacrifice ? How much time, energy and thoughts have we put in God's way?"
He continued saying that they needed to redefine and reorientate the meaning of sacrifice, "Sacrifice is a form of our worship to God. When we worship, it should be total and according to the regulations and requirements".

The prayer service started at about 7 am and led by Mochtar Ibnu, one of the mosque's imams. As many as 69 cows and 1374 goats were donated to be sacrificed today and the next day.

At Dian Al-Mahri Mosque located in Depok about 40 km south of here, the message delivered by austadz Fahrozi Ishak was affirming Muslims' faith commitment to sacrifice on Idul Adha for it could bridge the poor and the wealthy to eliminate social economic gap.

"We as Mohammad SAW prophet followers should take example of Ibrahim and Ismail the prophets on their sacrifices. If we are faithful to Allah SWT we will sacrifice not only our goods but also our life if it is required," he said in front of 15.000 people attend the Id prayer.

Furthermore he said in his sermon that if we possessed enough wealth, we should make a sacrifice by donating goats or cows and distribute their meat to the poor nearby so they could also experience God's blessings and inter human relationships could be strengthened.

Indonesia could be a more prosperous country if this tradition went on every year, said Fahrozi at the 'Golden Dome Mosque'.
