BJP sweeps Madhya Pradesh under Chouhan's leadership

Bhopal, Dec 8 (PTI) Chief Minister of the central Indian
state of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan Monday returned
to power for the second successive term decimating all charges
of corruption against his government.

Chouhan's victory proved that people in the state voted
for only one factor and that is development, which was the
Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) main poll plank in the state
Assembly polls held on November 27.

Born on March 6, 1959 at village Jait in Sehore district,
Chouhan had won the Lok Sabha polls five times from Vidisha
and was also elected as the member of the State Assembly
twice.

The 49-year-old BJP leader began his electoral politics
by winning Budhni assembly seat in 1990, but quit the seat on
November 23, 1991 to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Vidisha
seat.

Since then he represented Vidisha where he was popularly
known as 'Panv-panv wale Bhaiya' (one who always toured the
constituency on foot) till he was elected the Chief Minister
of Madhya Pradesh.

Chouhan elected as Member of Parliament (MP) from Vidisha
in the year 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004.

After becoming Chief Minister of the state on November
29, 2005 Chouhan entered the state assembly again from Budhni
seat on May 6, 2006.

Monday's victory of the ruling BJP has decimated all
charges of corruption against him levelled by the main
opposition Congress including the famous dumper scam and
charges of corruption against his ministers.

The BJP victory has also proved the time-tested theory
that nobody is bigger than the party and this time it applied
to Bharatiya Janshakti Party (BJS) President Uma Bharti, who
lost the polls from her home district Tikamgarh.

Chouhan was successful in carving an image as the common
man's Chief Minister, a term he used to describe himself as
one among them, a farmer's son.

People, specially women, have voted for him again as he
introduced a large number of women-oriented schemes directly
benefiting women like 'Ladli Laxmi Yojna' and 'Mukhya Mantri
Kanyadan Yojna'. All these welfare measures have popularized
him among the electorate. PTI MAS
