ABOUT 2,000 OFFICERS TO SAFEGUARD PRESIDENT'S VISIT TO PALEMBANG
Palembang, S Sumatra, Dec 8 (ANTARA) - About 2,000 military and police personnel will be deployed in Palembang to guarantee security during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's visit to the South Sumatran provincial capital on Friday, a military commander said.
The Sriwijaya Regional Military Commander, Maj. Gen. M. Sochib, said here on Monday that the police and military were like one package which would deploy some 1,000 to 2,000 officers during the visit.
It was reported earlier that President Yudhoyono had been scheduled to pay a working visit in Palembang, South Sumatra province, to inaugurate a flyover and open a national meeting of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI).
A regional government spokesman and a committee member of the ICMI meeting said on Monday that they were making preparations to welcome the head of state in South Sumatra province.
The president who is expected to arrive in Palembang on December 12, 2008 is slated to commission the 'Simpang Polda' flyover in Jalan Asnawi Mangkualam.
Besides the flyover, Yudhoyono will also inaugurate a number of development projects in the province, among other things, the Teluk II bridge in Musi Banyuasin district and a biodiesel factory in East Ogan Kemering Ulu (OKU) district.
The president is also scheduled to open the national meeting of the ICMI in Palembang, which will be attended by representatives from 33 branches of ICMI throughout the country.
The organizers said that the ICMI meeting was expected to contribute to the developments of the Muslims' intellectual organization in the future. The meeting will also hopefully have positive contribution to the nation.
According to Maj Gen Sochib, there was a discourse on whether or not the president would spend the night in Pelembang.
"Let's wait an advanced team tomorrow (Tuesday), and we will hold a meeting about," he said.
