Jakarta, Dec 8 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla on the occasion of Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) 1429 H on Monday donated one cow each to the Istiqlal Grand Mosque for slaughter and distribution to the needy.
After conducting the day's prayers in the mosque in the morning, the president, accompanied by First Lady Ani Bambang Yudhoyono, met the head of the mosque's sacrifices committee, H Mubarok, to present a cow weighing 1.4 tons to the committee. Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife, Hj Mufidah Kalla, followed suit and also handed a cow to the committee.
On Idul Adha this year, Istiqlal Mosque had received a total of 15 cows and 218 goats from donors consisting of institutions and private individuals.
Earlier in the morning, the President and Vice President joined thousands of people in the mosque to conduct Idul Adha prayers and listen to a sermon delivered by Communication and Informatics Minister Muhammad Nuh.
In his sermon, Nuh explained the meaning of Idul Adha by referring to the Haj pilgrimage which he said must be considered as a journey to earn Allah's blessings.
"All of the obstacles and challenges met during the journey can be compared to human beings' struggle to reach His heaven. People must also consider the Haj pilgrimage as a reminder that everything we do in this world should be dedicated to our creator, Allah SWT," the minister said.
The Idul Adha service was led by Istiqlal Mosque's imam, Syarifuddin Muhammad, and also attended by a number of cabinet ministers, including Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, and Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi.
