CENTRALIZATION OF SEAPORTS FOR IMPORT TO INCREASE SMUGGLINGS IN RIAU
Pekanbaru, Indonesia, Dec 7 (ANTARA) - A policy on centralization of seaport for import activity under the trade ministrial decree No 44, 2008 pertaining to procedures of certain import products will predictedly prompt more smugglings in Riau province.
"The closure of other seaport for five imported commodities in Riau will increase the frequency of smuggling activities," an economic analyst, Edyanus, said here on Sunday.
With the issuance of new regulation which will come into force on December 15, 2008, practically Dumai port will no longer function as a gateway for five import commodities to Riau. All importing activity for five import commodities will be shifted to Belawan. From that port, those import commodities will then be brought to Riau by land transporation.
According to him, the closure would not stop the traffic of international trade through sea transporation in Dumai. In fact, it would be able to cause international trade to use illegal public ports.
In addition, the closure will also hamper the Dumai city's plan to become a special economic zone (KEK) which is not in favour of Dumai in particular and Riau province in general in many sector, he said.
The ministrial decree No 44, 2008 underscored the appointment of five seaports as gateway for five import commodities such as electronic, textile, children's toys and food and soft drinks.
The five seaports are Belawan in Medan, Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, Tanjung Mas in Semarang, Tanjung Perak in Surabaya and Makassar International seaport.
