Railways to create elite force of 2,000 commandos
New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) In the wake of the recent terror
attacks in Mumbai, including on the Chattrapati Shivaji
Terminus, the Railways have decided to raise a force of 2,000
commandos, who will be deployed at select stations in the
country.
"We have decided to create a striking force of about
2,000 commandos equipped with AK-47 and other modern gadgets
keeping the security scenario in mind as there is a need to
have such force," said a senior Railway Police Force (RPF)
official.
The Railways are likely to spend about Rs 60 crore for
the special training of men selected to be in the force.
"The commandos drawn from RPF would be given special
training to tackle terror attacks on railway properties. We
are in the process of selecting RPF personnel to be trained as
commandos at the Border Security Force (BSF) training centre,"
said the official.
The commandos, will wear a special dress and have
state-of-the-art equipment, including bullet-proof jackets.
Once the training process is complete, they would
comprise the first of its kind elite force of the Railways, he
said, adding that their prime responsibility would be to
protect railway properties and passengers.
The Railway Protection Force currently escorts 1,450
important trains everyday.
A high-level committee comprising representatives from
the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Central Industrial Security
Force (CISF), National Security Guard (NSG), Delhi Police,
Railway Police Force (RPF) and Railways has already submitted
its report on a composite security plan.
The official said security upgradation was a continuous
process.
The Railways are in the process of installation of
Integrated Security Systems at over a hundred railway stations
as part of security upgradation.
The proposed system include CCTV surveillance system with
intelligent software, electronic access control, personal and
baggage screening system and explosive detection and disposal
system.
The Rail Ministry has also nominated a seven-member
expert committee to finalise installation.
