Consuming poison, hanging preferred methods to end lives

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Consuming poison and hanging seems
to be the most preferred methods of committing suicide in
India, with the latest government statistics showing that
two-thirds of the victims used these measures to end their
lives.

The report prepared by National Crime Records Bureau
(NCRB) also revealed that family problems and illnesses were
major causes for people taking the extreme step and they
accounted for about 50 percent of suicides.

The 'Accidental and Suicide Deaths in India -- 2007'
report said 34.8 per cent of a total of 1,22,637 who committed
suicide in 2007 chose poison. The percentage in 2006 was 35.5
percent.

The percentage of those consuming poison to commit
suicide in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra was
very high.

Close to 50 percent (7,375) of those who committed
suicide in Andhra Pradesh used poison while the corresponding
figures were 39.2 percent (5,826) in West Bengal and 36.8
percent (5,587) in Maharashtra.

Hanging was the second preferred route of those who ended
their lives, with 32.8 percent adopting this measure followed
by self immolation (8.5 percent) and drowning (6.8 percent).

A large number of suicide victims in Maharashtra (5,317),
West Bengal (5,169) and Kerala (4,316) hanged themselves, with
the figures standing for 35, 34.8 and 48.2 percent of those
who killed themselves in the respective states.

Among the causes of suicides, family problems accounted
for 23.8 percent while illnesses were the reason in 22.3
percent of the cases, according to the report.

Failure in love affairs was the reason for 2.8 percent
to take the extreme step, the statistics said, noting that
bankruptcy (2.7 percent) and poverty (2.3 percent) prompted
some others to commit suicide.

The NCRB also said suicides due to illness, drug abuse,
poverty and professional problems have shown an increasing
trend in the past three years while such incidents due to fall
in social reputation have shown a declining trend during the
same period. P
