ARF DELEGATES ADMIRE REHAB-RECON PROCESS IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Dec 6 (ANTARA) - Delegates from 21 Asean Regional Forum (ARF) member countries admire the post-tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction process in Aceh Province and intend to use it as a reference in natural disaster management around the world.
Tomasz Kozlowski, the European Union adviser for Asian and Latin American affairs here on Saturday extended his appreciation to the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Board (BRR) and Aceh government which were able to manage the situation after the devastating tsunami on December 26, 2004.
"The delegates from 21 ARF member countries have obtained first hand information about the progress in the rehabilitation and reconstruction work carried out by BRR and Aceh provincial administration," Kozlowski said.
He said the rehabilitation and reconstruction program ran smoothly because of good cooperation between the Indonesian government and the international community.
According to Kozlowski, the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts made by BRR could be a valuable lesson and experience for ARF to draw up standard guidelines for natural disaster management efforts in the world.
A total of 88 delegates from ARF member countries attended the 8th ARF meeting from December 5-6 in Banda Aceh to discuss matters related to disaster management.
The meeting was held to evaluate disaster management cooperation in Asia-Pacific region in the framework of the Asean Regional Forum, and to discuss the drafting of a ARF action plan.
Kozlowski, who was accompanied by the Foreign Affairs Ministry's Asia-Pacific and African affairs director general, Primo Alui Joelianto, and Aceh Vice Governor Muhammad Nazar, said the results of the meeting would be submitted to ARF's 16th ministerial meeting in 2009.
Meanwhile, Aceh Vice Governor Muhammad Nazir said it was expected in the ARF meeting that interstate gaps would be narrowed in an effort to implement emergency response activity.
He said Aceh could be an example for other areas in Indonesia and other countries to make a coordination system because the Aceh government had made a commitment to making the province safe.
