MPs PROTEST ISRAELI PRESENCE IN RI TRADE EXPO

Jakarta, Dec 5 (ANTARA) - Seven legislators have voiced a strong protest against the presence of Israeli representatives at the Indonesian trade expo "International Automation Technology and Materials Handling" held in Jakarta on December 3 - 6, 2008.

Al Muzzammil Yusuf, a member of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) which deals with foreign affairs, said in an SMS text message that seven legislators had protested the participation of the Israeli representatives in the trade expo.

The seven legislators were Al Muzzammil Yusuf and Suripto of the Prosperous Justice Party faction (FPKS), Abdillah Toha and Azlaini Agus of the National Mandate Party (PAN), Joeslin Nasution of the Golkar Party, Nursyahbani Katjasungkana of the National Awakening Party (FKB) faction and Ahmad Fauzi of the Democrat Party.

In a statement, the legislators asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Human Rights and Legal Affairs to provide open explanations on the reason why the Israeli companies could attend the trade expo.

Al Muzzammil said that the government was inconsistent with the message of the 1945 Constitution which rejected colonization and with its support for the Palestinian struggle for independence.

He said that Israel on the other hand was a symbol of arrogance in the world where it was still detaining no less than 40 members of Palestinian parliament, including Palestinian House Speaker Abd. Aziz Dweik.

"We are calling for the attention of the government not to be careless in opening a trade link in any form with Israel," he said.

He said the matter could hurt the feelings of Indonesian Muslims and the Indonesian people in general.

Therefore, the seven members of the House of Representatives (DPR) urged the expo's organizers to expel the Israeli partcipants from the event.
