MPR CHIEF URGES GOVT TO ANTICIPATE MASS LAYOFFS
Jakarta, 5/12 (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid has urged the Indonesian government to take more anticipatory steps in dealing with the impact of the global financial crisis.
He made the request, he said, because the crisis had already started to force companies in Indonesia to implement mass layoffs.
Large-scale layoffs were what he had all along feared would happen as a consquence of the global crisis, he said here after Friday prayers.
He urged the government to take all the necessary measures to minimize layoffs and to be ready with solutions for people who had lost their jobs.
Hidayat also called on the Indonesian people to begin adopting frugal life styles and to spend their money wisely.
"It is not that easy to anticipate the impact of the economic crisis. So, we had better live economically. Then at least we will be more prepared to adjust ourselves to the situation caused by unemployment while waiting for the government to find a more permanent solution," he said.
