Taekwondo`s `poomsae` to be introduced at 2009 Universiade: promoter

SEOUL, Dec. 5 (Yonhap) -- The 2009 Belgrade Universiade will feature the individual demonstrative form of taekwondo, or poomsae, as a non-medal event, the sport's world governing body here said Friday.
Poomsae is a form of taekwondo in which its practioners exhibit their mastery of
moves that form the core elements of the Korea-originated martial art. No
head-to-head contest is involved.
The World Taekwondo Federation said in a statement it has recently been notified
by Universiade organizers in Serbia that poomsae will be introduced as a
demonstration event along with the dual-type competition.
The schedule for the poomsae competition has yet to be fixed, the WTF said,
adding it expects taekwondo to be adopted as a full medal event at the 2013
Universiade.
Taekwondo has been an official Olympic medal event since the 2000 Games in
Sydney. The martial art is practiced in more than 150 countries with about 50
million participants around the world, according to its advocates.
