Teen driver injured in race crash
A teenage motor racing driver will undergo spinal surgery on Friday night after a serious crash during a support race to the V8 Supercar championship at Oran Park. Melbourne driver Lucas Dumbrell, the younger brother of Holden V8 Supercar driver Paul Dumbrell, rolled his car several times during a Formula Ford race at the western Sydney track on Friday.
The 19-year-old had to be cut from the wreckage of the open-wheeler car, and was
taken to Liverpool Hospital.
Officials said he had suspected spinal injuries but was conscious at the scene.
His racing team confirmed Lucas would have surgery on his back to determine the
extent of his injuries.
Lucas' shaken brother Paul competed only briefly during V8 Supercar practice after
the Formula Ford event, spending most of the day at Lucas' hospital bedside.
Lucas, who turned 19 earlier this week, is in his first season competing in the
Australian Formula Ford championship with Team Sonic.
The accident caused the abandonment of Friday's Formula Ford race.
