RI-JAPAN ANTIPIRACY EXERCISE IN JAKARTA BAY
Jakarta, Dec 4 (ANTARA) - The Japanese Coast Guard (JCG) and several Indonesian maritime safety agencies held a joint anti piracy operation exercise in the Bay of Jakarta on Thursday.
In the exercise, personnel from the Japanese and Indonesian sides simulated the rescue of MV Marcopolo from an armed piracy attempt.
The JCG was represented in the exercise by its largest patrol ship, the Shikishima, and the Indonesian agencies by a number of patrol boats.
In the simulation, the MV Marcopolo was successfully prevented from being hijacked although one of the crew members was injured by pirate fire. The operation ended with the capture of the escaping pirates by a PLH (Patrol Large Helicopter) from the Shikishima, after a 30-minute chase.
Col Andi Achdiar, chief of operations of the Indonesian Maritime Security Coordination Agency (Bakorkamla), said Indonesia was expected to also have a patrol ship like the Shikishima in the future. "But we are still coordinating with the Indonesian Navy and other marine defense institutions to provide us with a proper patrol ship," he said.
Achdiar said Indonesia also needed to have a coast guard force because the country was an archipelago with many islands and a vast maritime territory.
The tasks of a coast guard was not only to deal with pirates but also to overcome sea pollution problems, he said.
The Shikishima arrived at Jakarta's Tanjung Priok port last December 1 under JCG's program to hold joint maritime safety exercises with other countries. It is to return to Yokohama, Japan, on December 5.
Earlier, on Tuesday (Dec 2), JCG personnel demonstrated their pirate disabling skills on the Shikishama's helicopter deck.
The activity was partcipated in by nine Indonesian security offficers from Bakorkamla, the Marine Police and the Sea Transportation Directorate General.
The crew of the Shikishima patrol ship is led by Captain Shiro Kanbe assisted by Shozaburou Kurosawa as the ship's executive officer.
Some 150 meters long, 17 meters wide and with a displacement of 6,500 tons , the ship is capable of carrying two Super Puma helicopters and two speedboats. It is armad with two 35-milimeter rapid-fire dual guns and a 20-milimeter Vulcan gun, and can develop a cruising speed of 30 knots.
"We have conducted similar joint exercises with many countries, including Korea, Russia, Canada, the USA, the Philippines, Brunei, Australia and New Zealand," Osamu Kawaguchi, the ship's chief aviation officer, said.
