Cold snap hits S. Korea
SEOUL, Dec. 5 (Yonhap) -- A cold spell swept through South Korea on Friday,
sending the mercury to its lowest point this season, the national weather agency
said.
Seoul registered the lowest temperature of this winter with minus 6 C, while
Cheolwon, a town in Gangwon province close to the border with North Korea,
dropped to minus 7 C, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
Daegwalleyong, a mountain pass in South Korea's northwestern region, had the
lowest temperature with minus 7.7 C, the weather agency said.
The morning low was minus 7 C in the coastal city of Incheon, west of Seoul, and
minus 2.4 C in the central city of Daejeon, South Chungcheong province.
The southern part of the country was under a heavy snow warning with 10 to 20
centimeters of snow expected late Friday in the western coastal regions of South
Chungcheong and North Jeolla provinces, and on Jeju Island.
A storm warning was also issued for the West Sea and the waters surrounding Jeju.
The cold snap is expected to last through the weekend, with the morning low
expected to drop to minus 10 C in Seoul and far below zero in most other regions,
they said.
Temperatures will begin to rise gently on Sunday afternoon as a continental high
pressure system moves away from the peninsula, the KMA said.
