MINISTER INAUGURATES UPGRADED BROWN COAL PROJECT

Batulucin, S Kalimantan, Dec 4 (ANTARA) - Energy and Mineral Resources Mininister Purnomo Yusgiantoro inaugurated an upgraded brown coal (UBC) project in Satui sub-district, Tanah Bumbu district, South Kalimantan on Thursday.
The UBC factory is a pioneer project and coal upgrading factory applying a technology which could increase the quality of low quality coal so that Indonesia in the future is expected to supply the world with good quality of coal.
The inauguration of the operation of the UBC project in Satui subdistrict was intended to serve as a pioneer factory in Indonesia, even in the world. If it was able to develop well, it would further be developed into a commercial factory.
The UBC project has a capacity of processing 1,000 tons of low quality coals into 700 tons of high quality coal per day.
"We hope that this pioneer project would have become commercially operational in 2009 so that in 2010 its capacity could be increased five times from the present one," the minister said.
On the occasion, the minister said Indonesia and Australia still constitute the biggest coal producer countries in the Asia and Pacific region.
The function was also attended by Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shio Jiki, South Kalimtantan Governor Rudy Ariffin and other Tanah Bumbu Police Precinct chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Irianto. ***2***
