Four universities abroad to receive Korean studies funding
SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korea named four overseas universities on
Thursday as recipients of this year's government funding scheme to support Korean
studies programs outside the country, the education ministry said Thursday.
The recipients are Canada's University of British Columbia, Leiden University in
the Netherlands and two Chinese schools, Nanjing University and Central
University for Nationalities, it said.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology launched the funding scheme in
2006 to provide up to 200 million won (US$135,593) annually for five years for
each recipient. The grant will particularly help the Dutch Leiden University keep
its Korean studies program, which was on the brink of closure as part of the
school's restructuring, officials said.
