RI'S EASTERN REGIONS YIELD HALF OF NAT'L FISHERY EXPORT EARNINGS

Makassar, S Sulawesi, Dec 3 (ANTARA)- Fishery exports from Indonesia's eastern regions in the January- (early) December period in 2008 generated earnings totaling Rp15 trillion or half of the national fishery export target of Rp30 trillion, a senior fisheries official said.

The country's fish exports had so far gone to the United States, Japan and European Union, said Martini Huseini, director general of fish marketing and processing at the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry, here on Wednesday.

According to her, the government was now trying to expand the country's fish export market to Middle Eastern countries.

"Middle Eastern countries have expressed their interest in buying Indonesian fishery products," Martini said, adding that Indonesia was also exploring the possibility of exporting fish to Russia.

So far, shrimp has been the main component of Indonesia's fishery exports, she said.

"The value of Indonesia's shrimp exports in 2006 was US$2.3 billion. It rose in 2007 to US$2.6 billion and was recorded at US$2.8 billion in 2008 (until the beginning of December)," Martini added.
