MANY CONSTRAINTS HAMPERING CBM DEVELOPMENT IN RI : OFFICIAL

Bandung, W Java, Dec 3 (ANTARA) - Although scientifically coal bed methane (CBM) has been identified as a potential new energy source with promising prospects, many constraints hamper its development in Indonesia, an energy offairs official said.
Among the many constraints were overlapping development areas, difficulties in clearing the needed land, licensing problems, according to Bob Yulian, head of the exploration division of the Up-stream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BP Migas) at a workshop on CBM development organized by the Technical Geology Faculty of Padjadjaran University (Unpad) here Wednesday.
Another problem that had to be addressed urgently to be able to conduct explorations on new energy sources was the need for a lot of data, he said. The government lacked the funds needed to obtain data so that the only possible solution was establising cooperation with data collecting companies.
Yulian also said although in scientific terms, CBM was considered to have great potentials as an alternative energy source it would be a little difficult to familiarize the public with its possibilities.
The workshop, themed "Course & Workshop CBM: The Rising Energy", was opened on Tuesday (Nov 2) is to run until Thursday (Dec 4). It was scheduled to feature other speakers, including the energy and mineral resources ministry's director general of oil and gas affairs, Evita Legowo, and Sultan of coal company PT Arutmin.
