Exhibition on South Korea's worst-ever oil spill to be held
TAEAN, South Korea, Dec. 3 (Yonhap) -- An exhibition will be held later this week
to commemorate the oil spill that hit South Korea in 2007, the worst natural
disaster the country has ever experienced, a non-governmental organization said.
Around 12,000 tons of crude oil spilled into the west sea in December of that
year following a collision between an oil tanker owned by the Hong
Kong-registered Hebei Spirit Shipping Co. and a barge owned by Samsung Heavy
Industries Co.
The collision occured in waters off Taean County, South Chungcheong Province,
blackening beaches and fish farms along the west coast. The barge, which was
carrying a crane, separated from its two tugboats and collided with the tanker.
"We will display some of the articles related to the painful memory along the
west sea," the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement said in a statement.
"We hope that such incidents will not be repeated in this country."
Under the theme "Memories of Black Tears," the exhibition will be held at Seoul's
Yongsan Station, showcasing some 100 items, including photographs, posters and
tools used to clean the water.
