First commercial flight lands at Suvarnabhumi
BANGKOK, Dec 3 (TNA) – The first commercial flight of Thai Airways touched down at Suvarnabhumi Wednesday afternoon, symbolically reopening Bangkok's face to the world, after week-long strangle-hold by anti-government protesters has critically damaged Thailand's tourism, exports and future employment prospects for possibly years to come.
The Thai Airways flight arrived at 2:15 (0715 GMT) from the resort island of Phuket.
Suvarnabhumi Airport director Serirat Prasutanond said the second flight will be Royal Jordanian Airlines flight RJ 180 with 60 passengers scheduled to arrive at Suvarnabhumi at 3.25 pm.
Thai Airways flights to Sydney, Delhi, Narita, Frankfurt, Seoul and Copenhagen will depart beginning at 5.25pm Wednesday, with flights through the night.
The anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), which occupied Suvarnabhumi Airport eight days ago, and Don Mueang one day later, lifted their seige, proclaiming victory in their successful quest to remove now former prime minister Somchai Wangsawat from office.
Cargo flights from Suvarnabhumi resumed December 2.
Meanwhile, Don Mueang airport director acting Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulbutra said after the situation returned to normal, the airport would discuss with the agencies concerned to resume its services as soon as possible. (TNA)
