RI`S FISHERY EXPORTS NORMAL UNTIL EARLY DECEMBER

Jakarta, Dec 2 (ANTARA) - Marine and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi said there had been no decline in the volume of Indonesia's fishery exports until early December 2008.

"Until now, the volume of our fishery exports had remained normal," he said here Tuesday.

He however also said that businessmen in the fishery sector were worried about a possible drop in the volume of their exports in the first quarter next year as no new contracts had been signed so far.

Overseas buyers were until now still honoring trade contracts they had signed before by not cancelling imports although they were facing liquidity problems due to the current global financial crisis, he said.

"They are all respecting the existing contracts and there have been no cancellation of orders," he said.

He said his office had tried to inform businessmen in the fishery sector about alternative markets they could possibly penetrate such as the Middle East.

Although there was fear fishery exports would drop next year the country's shrimp production was rising. "We are now even overproducing. We hope the US market can still absorb our shrimps," he said.

The director general of fishery development, Made Nurjanah, meanwhile said that there had been no decline in shrimp exports to the US until now.

He said the contracts remained to be met and there had been no request for renegotiations of the price.

He however said that importers had asked for a price cut because of decreasing demand in the US and therefore the size of the exported shrimps was smaller.

"They have indeed asked for smaller size shrimps. In Indonesia when the size is changed for example from 60 to 50 centimeters the price will drop Rp200 to Rp300. So the price difference is not big," he said.

But it was clear no company in the US had so far asked for renegotiations on the volume of shipments, he said.
