MUHAMMADIYAH LEADER REGRETS MUMBAI ATTACK, URGES WORLD TO FIGHT TERRORISM

Jakarta, Dec 2 (ANTARA)- Muhammamdiyah leader Din Syamsuddin has expressed regret about the Mumbai terorist attacks, saying the incident should not be linked to Islam as the religion taught peace and love instead of killing people.

"I regret the attack and reject any attempt to link it with Islam. There is no place in Islam for terrorism since our religion teaches its followers not to kill other humans," he said after a meeting with the new Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia, Ahmed Muhammad El Khawaishni, at the Muhammadiyah Center in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

The leader of the second largest Muslim mass organization in Indonesia urged all citizens of the world to unite and fight terrorism. The terror actions in Mumbai, he said, were a misuse of religious beliefs done by a minority of the Muslim community.

Asked about the agenda of his meeting with the new Egyptian envoy, Syamsuddin said they introduced themselves to each other since the Egyptian ambassador was new to Indonesia.

Furthermore, he had used the meeting to discuss with Khawaishni the strong relations between Muhammadiyah and Egypt, especially in the field of education.

Muhammadiyah, he said, had been conducting student and lecturer exchanges with the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, for a long time.

In fact, he said, Muhammadiyah had established a base in Egypt consisting of 180 Indonesians who were studying there.

In the meeting, the Muhammadiyah leader also expressed hope that Muhammadiyah could cooperate with Egypt in fields other than education
