ELEVEN DEATHS AMONG PEOPLE PANNING GOLD IN SE SULAWESI
Kasipute, Southeast Sulawesi, Dec. 2 (ANTARA) - As many as 11 deaths occurred among people panning gold in a traditional gold mining area in Bombana district, Southeast Sulawesi since the field was opened to the public early November, a local official said.
The deaths were caused by illness and accidents, including road accidents and landslides, Cecep Trisnajayadi, head of the Bombana district's mineral resources and energy office, said here on Tuesday.
He denied reports saying that tens of people were killed due to torture or other crimes in the mining area.
However, he admitted that he did not have accurate details on the deaths because the mining area was very vast and the dead people's relatives had never reported their deaths.
Some 40,000 people have set up temporary settlements to pan gold in the Bombana gold mining area since it was officially declared open to the public last November 1, 2008, Trisnajayadi said.
