PRESIDENT : TEACHERS' CAPABILITY, WELFARE TO BE CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVED

Jakarta, Dec. 2 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government was committed to the continuous improvement of teachers' capability and welfare for the advancement of national education.

"The government is very serious in its intention to improve the capability and welfare of teachers," the president said in his address to mark National Teachers' Day and the 63rd anniversary of the Indonesian Teachers' Association (PGRI) at the Senayan tennis stadium here on Tuesday.

The government's seriousness was reflected in the declaration of teaching as a profession on December 2, 2004, and the issuance of the law on teachers and lecturers in 2005, the government regulation (PP) No. 47/2008 on funding of education in 2008, and PP No.48/2008 on compulsory education.

"This week, in order to honor teachers, we will issue a government regulation (PP) on allowances to be provided to teachers," the President said.
Despite the current global economic crisis, the government would proceed with its plan to allocate 20 percent of the State Budget 2009 for education , he said.

"Although the financial crisis has affected the economy and the State Budget (APBN), our commitment to allocating 20 percent of the APBN for education will be fulfilled," he said.

A total of 738,042 teachers had been given civil servant status towards the end of 2008, he said. But some 163,565 teachers were waiting to become civil servants in 2009, he said.

Yudhoyono on the occasion was accompanied among others by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, Communication and Informatics Minister Mohammad Nuh and PGRI Chairman Sulistyo.

The head of state presented awards to a number of people, including West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi, Bali Deputy Governor Anak Agung Gede Ngurah, Yogyakarta Mayor Herry Zudiarto, and some other local officials and teachers, for their significant contributions to the implementation of national education programs.
