BALI DEMOCRACY FORUM EXPECTED TO BECOME EMBRYO OF EVERLASTING PEACE IN ASIA
Jakarta, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - The Bali Democracy Forum to be held in the resort island of Bali was expected to become an embryo of everlasting peace in countries in the Asian region, a senior official of the foreign ministry said.
Andri Hadi, the Director General of Information and Public Diplomacy in a press conference at the Borobudur Hotel here on Monday, said that the BDF is aimed at establishing a regional cooperation in political development through a dialogue and sharing experiences on strengthening democratic institutions.
In addition, the forum is also designed to initiate a learning and sharing process among countries in Asia as a strategy in the maintenance of peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond to build a platform of mutual support and cooperation in democratic and political development.
"Above all, what exactly many countries want to prevail is everlasting peace and fostering cooperation in solving their problems," he said.
However the BDF is an international forum of countries in the Asian region, Andri said.
In the meantime, Public Diplomacy Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Umar Hadi said that merely economic progress would not be able to create peace on earth, as economic players tend to play a controling role in underdeveloped or developing countries. And in practice, the developing countries will remain dependent economically on advanced countries.
It was only through democracy and cooperation that such peace will prevail, he said, adding it was for this purpose that democratic consolidation and a strategic agenda for Asia could be developed.
In the meantime, the BDF is also expected to contribute to the pursuit of democratic ideals through dialogues and cooperation. It is also an instrument dedicated to promote regional and international democratic cooperation.
It is also expected to strengthen democratic institutions at national level, and therefore it will also bridge the gaps in political developments in Asia.
To be held on Dec 10 and 11, the BDF will allow governments to discuss issues of common interest such as regular and genuine elections, multyparty system in a pluralistic and tolerant society, effective parliaments, independent judiciary, good governance, active and vibrant media, benefits of an open and competitive economuy that ensures social justice for all, forging a strong and dynamic civil society, and a good role of professional military in a democratic society.
