"SHIKISHAMA" ARRIVED IN JAKARTA FOR A PIRACY JOINT EXERCISE

Jakarta, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - Japan Coast Guard (JCG) ship "Shikisama", scheduled for a Japan-Indonesia joint exercise in Indonesian waters on December 5, 2008, arrived at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, on Monday.

"This joint exercise is aimed to enhance JCG and Bakorkamla (Marine Security Coordinating Agency), after the JCG commander visited Indonesia earlier this year. In this event, they are showing their coast guard defense capacity," Bakorkamla Vice Admiral, Budhi Hardjo said here.

The 150 meters long and 6.500 tons Shikishama battle ship carrying two super puma helicopters and two 35 and 20 millimeters cannons. In 1992, the Shikishima has escorted a plutonium carrier ship from France to Japan.

On its arrival in Tanjung Priok Port, Shikishima, which was led by Captain Shiro Kanbe received a huge welcome ceremony from Bakorkamla's information legal and cooperation center deputy, Tri Yuswoyo, at 10.00 am local time.

"We would conduct an arm robbery joint exercise and a legal and law enforcement experience exchange on-board training," he said.

"The Somalian ship piracy might occur in Indonesia, but the chance is very small, because we have many islands which make their escapes harder," he said in answering Captain Kanbe on the possibility of ship piracy like in Somalia, in Bakorkamla head quarter, here.

Shikishima is scheduled for an open ship session on Tuesday (12/2) while the joint exercise is scheduled on Thursday (12/4). The ship will head back to Yokohama, Japan on December 6, 2008 at 3.30 pm local time.
