PBH MIGAS PREDICTS 1-5-PCT INCREASE IN PREMIUM GASOLINE CONSUMPTION
Jakarta, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - The Down-stream Oil and Gas Regulating Body (BPH Migas) predicted subsidized premium gasoline consumption in Indonesia will increase by about 1-5 percent as a consequence of the Rp500 cut in the fuel's retail price starting Monday (Dec 1).
Speaking to the press after attending a closed-door meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission VII dealing with energy affairs here Monday, BPH Migas chief Tubagus Haryono said the expected increase in consumption after the price cut was something normal.
"But the increase in premium gasoline consumption is not likely to be sharp. We have not yet seen any rush on fuel refilling stations (SBPUs). There are no long queues at refueling stations," he said.
He admitted however there was a moment when SBPUs in Sumatra ran out of premium gasoline but they were quickly provided with more supplies by state oil company Pertamina.
"It could be the SPBUs there were afraid they would suffer losses but Pertamina had coped with the problem," he added.
Tubagus said the increase in subsidized premium gasoline consumption would not be too high because many consumers had previously switched to another type of fuel -- pertamax.
Pertamina had earlier decided to increase its subsidized premium gasoline stocks in anticipation of an increase in consumption in the face of the implementation of the price cut beginning on Monday.
Last month the government announced it had decided to cut the price of subsidized premium gasoline from Rp6,000 to Rp5,500 per liter effective December 1, 2008.
Pertamina spokesman Anang Rizkani Noor said Pertamina had increased its normal premium gasoline stocks by up to 10 percent to anticipate an increase in consumption.
Subsidized premium gasoline consumption now stood at 50,000 kiloliters per day. Pertamina would also maintain its fuel oil supplies at a secure level for up to 20 days.
The government decided to lower the premium gasoline price after observing the downturn in the world crude price from US$147 per barrel in July 2008 to the current level of US$60 per barrel. ***2***
