PRESIDENT HOPES POLITICAL TENSIONS IN THAILAND OVER SOON
Jakarta, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed hope the Thai government and nation will be able soon to end the current political tensions and find the best possible solution to the conflict in their country.
"Indonesia hopes the Thai government will be able to manage, overcome the situation, and restore normalcy, and let democracy prevail," President Yudhoyono said in a press conference at the Merdeka Palace here on Monday.
The president said the Thai government and nation's ability to end the present political tensions would be the first step towards a solution to the country's present problem.
About the fate of a number of Indonesian nationals who were trapped at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Yudhoyono said the government and the various agencies handling the problem were continuing their efforts to evacuate them.
"Of the approximately 320 Indonesians who got stuck at the Thai airport, 110 have returned to Indonesia but the rest are still there," the president said.
The head of state said he had contacted the Indonesian Ambassador to Thailand Muhammad Hatta to find ways to enable the Indonesians still at the airport to return home.
"They are ready to be evacuated to Indonesia and our embassy there is trying to make it possible," Yudhoyono said, adding that a Garuda plane would leave for Bankok to carry the remaining 165 Indonesians back to Jakarta.
On the occasion, the president also called on the National Defense Forces (TNI) and Police to remain alert to possibility of security disturbances like the terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, and the political violence in Thailand happening in the country.
"The Police, TNI, and Intelligence agencies should be able to maintain security and to act quickly when there is a security disturbance," President Yudhoyono said at Merdeka Palace here on Monday.
He said the ability to take quick action to overcome security disturbances should continue to be maintained while every action taken by the TNI and Police should be in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
To create secure conditions in the country, the head of state instructed the TNI, Police, and intelligence agencies to intensify trainings and alertness.
