MILY IN NTB STEPPING UP SECURITY FOLLOWING MUMBAI ATTACKS

Mataram, Indonesia, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) military command has stepped up its territorial monitoring operations in the province in view of the possibility of terrorist elements from Mumbai, India, trying to hide in the province, a spokesman said.

"We have stepped up monitoring operations in the fled and coordination with the NTB police in anticipation of a possible fallout of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in the region," Col Andreas Purwoko, the chief of the Wira Bhakti military command, said here Monday.

He said the military in the province was continuously monitoring conditions in the field, and checking the possibility that terrorist elements from India had come to NTB disguised as tourists to hide.

According to Purwoko, NTB was not only a region attracting foreign tourists but also problematic foreigners as shown by a case involving 44 Iraqis who came to Sumbawa island in mid-November.

"There were 41 problematic Iraqis in Sumbawa but their case has now been settled. However, we must continue to anticipate the possibility of such cases happening again," Purwoko said.

He said terrorism could not be fought by the military and police forces alone but with the support and participation of all components of the community, he said.
