PRESIDENT CALLS FOR CONTROL OF SUBSIDIZED FERTILIZER CIRCULATION
Cibodas, W Java, Nov 30 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Sunday called on all regional administrations to control the circulation of subsidized fertilizers in their respective regions as fertilizer shortages are affecting several parts of the country.
Addressing the second jamboree and festival of agriculture information officers here, the president asked governors, district heads and mayors across the country to ensure that subsidized fertilizers would go to those entitled to them.
"The recipients of subsidized fertilizers must not be companies or the like," he said.
He said heads of regional government were responsible for failed harvests and agricultural problems in their respective regions.
They must always solve all agricultural problems in the field rather than referring them to the central government for their settlement, he said.
"A leader must be able to solve problems in his/her own region," he said.
Earlier, West Java Governor Achmad Heryawan said unlike other provinces in the country, West Java was not facing subsidized fertilizer scarcity.
He said West Java had fertilizer stocks enough until December.
The governor's statement sparked a spontaneous response from the agriculture information officers who shouted he told a lie.
One of the agriculture information officers said West Java was running short of fertilizers of Phonska type, while the stock of subsidized urea fertilizers was very limited.
